The Browning BAR 4X Hunter HC is a semi-automatic hunting rifle in 9.3×62, built around a proven gas-piston action. This version combines a 53 cm cold hammer-forged barrel, a detachable DBM magazine, the new top-mounted HC safety control and an M15×1 muzzle thread for fitting a compatible suppressor.
Part of the propellant gas drives a piston, which cycles the action and loads the next cartridge. The rotating bolt locks directly into the barrel by means of seven locking lugs. This construction gives the BAR its well-known reliability and provides the secure lock-up required by the powerful 9.3×62 cartridge.
The piston operates the semi-automatic cycle and supports quick, controlled follow-up shots.

The DBM version uses a detachable magazine for straightforward loading and unloading.
The HC control is positioned on the upper rear of the receiver, directly above the pistol grip. Compared with the previous generation, Browning has enlarged the button and shortened its travel by 25%, making it easier to operate without changing the shooting grip.
- Pushing the HC control forward tensions the hammer springs and places the rifle in the ready-to-fire state.
- A red dot behind the control becomes visible when the mechanism is cocked.
- Pressing the control forward and down allows it to return rearward, releases spring tension and restores the safe state.
The rifle should remain in the safe state until a shot is imminent. The red indicator provides a clear visual check of whether the HC mechanism is cocked.
- The 53 cm steel barrel is cold hammer forged.
- Longitudinal lightening flutes reduce unnecessary mass while retaining the Hunter profile.
- The chamber is chrome finished.
- The M15×1 muzzle thread is intended for fitting a compatible suppressor.
This rifle is supplied without a front or rear iron sight. The top of the receiver has four factory-threaded holes for fitting a suitable optic mount.
A suppressor changes the gas pressure inside the barrel. Browning recommends that the gas setting be checked and, where necessary, adjusted with the suppressor fitted by a qualified gunsmith. The firearm, suppressor and ammunition must be mutually compatible.
The black composite stock and fore-end use brown rubber overmoulded grip areas with a leather-like texture. The stock geometry is suitable for shooting from either shoulder, while the action itself is right-handed. A fixed soft comb and the Inflex II recoil pad improve contact with the shoulder and cheek.
